Clearing the Browser Tabs – Slowhand in the Morning Sunday Edition

Because this has been a long week for a lot of us and we could use something good for our hearts.

Because news gets heavy after a while and it simply doesn’t nourish our souls very much.

Because the sound of a guitar, played by a master, can make any morning good.

Because I dig you guys and I like passing along the good stuff.

Here is some morning Clapton, a live performance of his classic “Cocaine”. The inspiration came, of all places, from a Twitter conversation I had with my friends @killpundit and @Jenny_IDLYITW about Sherlock Holmes and his various addictions. It’s in my timeline if you want to read it.

Once you’ve drunk deeply from the well of that rock goodness, here’s a little dessert — Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Sting, and Phil Collins all on the same stage for “Money for Nothing”. The guitar solos should set you up for the whole day.

• I’m quick to bash President Obama when he does something wrong (like, say, tout bad unemployment numbers as progress when the truth is worse than we know), and goodness knows I’ve done that quite a lot this year. When he does something right, though, I’ll praise him just as quickly and he did something very right when he pulled back new EPA smog regulations. They would have put another knife in the gut of a very weak economy for very little good reason, no matter what the screaming totalitarians in the environmental movement say. He could do another good thing by pulling his administration back from the Keystone XL oil pipeline that would bring millions of gallons of “friendly” oil to us from Canada.
• I’m not as enthusiastic as Stacy McCain about Sarah Palin’s speech in Iowa. It wasn’t a particularly good speech unless you’re already a Palin fan. She didn’t break any new ground, didn’t get into many details, and lobbed around some pretty easy platitudes that could have just as easily come from any of the Presidential candidates. What’s worse, she hinted at a big announcement and didn’t deliver one. That sort of coy teasing will go over great with the Palin faithful, but I believe the electorate in general aren’t as amused.
• This good man might get into some legal trouble, but he did right and I would hope that the management of the Burger King restaurant in question realizes that and declines to make anything more of the matter.
• Some people simply won’t let go of the “austerity” myth, probably because reality doesn’t look all that great for those of a certain ideology.
• I understand why many people who are not religious would not want our President to make important policy decisions based on what they believe is legend and fable. I do not understand why those same people do not scream loudly when our government makes those decisions based on the legend and fable of the Global Warming Cult.
• What’s holding up federal disaster relief funds to Irene-stricken areas? It’s not what you’ve been told by the MSM, I can guarantee.
• If you’re going to work in politics and write for yourself, at your own blog, you’re going to need to be transparent about who you are and what you do. My friend Sarah Rumpf provided a good template you can follow should you find yourself in need of such a policy.
• This quote, unearthed by Peter Robinson, sums up why I love the sport of baseball and why I dislike what Major League Baseball has done to it.
• Hmm…an Amazon tablet that will run Android and cost about $250? I’m interested.
• I strongly endorse this column at IO9 on the loss of space-based sci-fi. It is sad that we no longer make real space opera movies and television shows. They tell stories that are still important to us and we will miss them while they are gone.
• If I had been on the set with these television anchors, I would have been upset, too! It’s not every day you can watch a bridge explode live.
• Okay. One more lovely tune to play you into the day — Billie Holiday’s version of the Gershwin’s “But Not for Me”.
