Well, it certainly didn’t take long last night for a number of notable progressives to turn what should have been a moment of unifying national triumph into a left-wing partisan snark-off. I gleaned a few of the more egregious comments from some of the brighter lights of the left-wing commentariat as they posted them on Twitter.
There are quite a few of them so I put them after the jump. Sit back and bask in the unabashed patriotism, calls for unity, and setting aside of petty political differences. Or, you know, not.
Katrina vandenHeuvel, editor and publisher of The Nation magazine:
@peterdaou Sadness for families, victims & for what this country has lost in lives in wars & in damage thru fearmongering 2 our principles/
Peter Daou, former Hillary Clinton adviser and contributor to the Huffington Post.
May Bin Laden’s death mark the end of the civil liberties violations, the indefinite detention, the war without end, unleashed by 9/11
Jonathan Chait, senior editor of The New Republic magazine:
May 1: Hitler dead, OBL dead, Jonathan Chait born. Bush tried to ruin my b-day w/Mission Accomplished photo-op, but failed.
Think Progress, blogging wing of John Podesta’s “think tank” Center for American Progress:
Looks like Bush gave that “Mission Accomplished” speech 8 years too early.
Media Matters’ hack Oliver Willis:
“how’s that hope and change working out for ya?” me: fine. just fine.
David Roberts, staff writer for Grist magazine:
Turns out sending some badass special ops guys into Pakistan is a more effective way of killing Bin Laden than invading Iraq.
Max Blumenthal, columnist and videographer:
Cheering crowds remind me of those who gathered to celebrate Ted Bundy’s execution #osama
Michael Moore, documentary filmmaker:
8 years to the day when Bush put on that costume and falsely declared “Mission: Accomplished.”
Andrew Card, Bush Chief of Staff, on ABC now, defensive about why Bush couldn’t get bin Laden — the “War President” had nearly EIGHT YEARS.
Aisha Tyler, actress:

John McCain’s secret plan to get OBL was to lose the election.
“This is the Mission Accomplished moment that President Bush only fantasized [about].” — Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-NY) on CNN just now.
