I think it would matter more had Wisconsin and Ohio not happened; the events in those two states give him an easier out because the times have changed since his initial denials.  Events in those two states and the budget battle in DC make the issues he has dealt with in NJ more relevant national topics.
He does, however, stand to lose an awful lot by not running in 2010.  As we&#039;ve seen, political cycles move fast, and it&#039;s easy to go from &quot;Conservative Rock Star&quot; to &quot;RINO.&quot;  It&#039;s probably easier in a place like NJ.  You also can&#039;t predict the national stage, and whether he&#039;ll be eclipsed by someone else by the time 2016 rolls around.
I&#039;m not saying he would necessarily win, just that even with the denials &#039;12 might be his best chance.  As Hillary Clinton&#039;s 2004-2008 roller coaster demonstrates, it&#039;s usually best to strike while your iron is hot.
