Chomsky says "You could almost interpret it a kind of a death knell for the species," because:
“If this was happening in some small country, in you know maybe Monaco or something, it wouldn’t matter much, but when it’s happening in the richest, most powerful country in the world – it’s a danger to the survival of the species. Nobody else is going to do much if the United States doesn’t do a lot, not just some but take the lead. So we’re essentially saying let’s kiss each other goodbye.”
You also said:
"you could interpret what happened in November as the inevitable result of the fult-tilt boogie toward a totalitarian government very few Americans actually want to see."
Chomsky knows this. He has written and talked about about it in his books and lectures, many of which you can see on Youtube. He is trying to tell people that the problem is much, much more serious than loss of freedoms. The loss of freedoms, by the way, I guess you know, he has spoken against for decades.

Did you read the rest of the article and video you're using to support the claim that we shouldn't listen to Chomsky?
