Clearing the Browser Tabs – Martin Luther King Jr Monday Edition
As you probably know, especially if you’re home from work, today is the day we remember a pretty great man. Martin Luther King, Jr. was, so far as I’m concerned, a rare creature — a charismatic visionary who didn’t build a self-aggrandizing movement about himself. He used his gifts to serve this country very well and I’m thankful he chose to do so. If you get a few minutes, I recommend you listen to his “I Have A Dream” speech, if for no other reason than to reacquaint yourself with the vision he had for this country. It’s a good vision for all of us to have still.
And now, links!
- Pope Benedict XVI will beatify Pope John Paul II this spring. Beatification is the last step before sainthood, should the Church grant it. I think he’s an excellent candidate. Few Catholics have done as much in their lives for good as John Paul II.
- When the value of your house crashes in a year or so, you’ll know just who to blame.
- I’m with Don Surber and Moe Lane. If I choose to be civil, it’s because I choose it, not because I allow myself to be cowed into it by the same progressive jerks who have spent the last ten years in one long insane rant. And if they want to cry about it, well, I’m not listening.
- Big Hollywood has an excellent detailed review of Goldfinger, my favorite Bond movie. The author hits on every reason I love the film, and a couple points I hadn’t considered.
- Why is American television stealing very good British shows and turning them into crap? I had this very same conversation with a couple friends of mine the other day. None of us had an answer except to say that it’s a cheap and easy way to build a quick audience for a season or so.
- Now this is a cool eclipse photograph!

I think that US TV should copy British TV in that each series is only guaranteed 1 full season at a time. I was horrified to learn that Big Bang Theory was renewed for 3 more seasons. As much as I love that show, I’m worried about how this leeway is going to affect the show. :\
I think that after Caprica and the splitting of full seasons into .0 and .5 installments, I’m done with SyFy originals that I’m not already invested in, like Eureka. I’m tired of seeing Craig Engler twist himself into a pretzel on Twitter blaming viewers and making excuses about stupid things SyFy has done. While I agree that some British shows wouldn’t translate well without a remake, his "proof"–the ratings of the Doctor Who Christmas Special, which aired in the US on a channel that most people don’t even have–was flimsy and kind of insulting.
Wow. That was a TL;DR way of saying that I’m not going to watch Being Human. End nerd rant, I guess. ^_^
