If There Is No Nuclear Crisis, Go Out and Create One!
I’m just going to go ahead and question the timing here.
The latest campaign of the U.S. government focuses on what to do in case of a nuclear attack. The only problem is that, like many government programs, it does not offer much useful advice. According to government officials, the best thing one can do is stay put and find shelter. Sounds like the old “duck and cover” from the Cold War, doesn’t it?
The new campaign came complete with a big media rollout that got articles in both the New York Times and USA Today last week. FEMA is about to embark on a nationwide effort that will “[move] aggressively to conduct drills, prepare communication guides and raise awareness among emergency planners of how to educate the public”.
Why the urgency? I mean, when our last President found that Saddam Hussein was buying yellowcake uranium (with which to build a nuclear weapon or two) and actually said something about it, Democrats laughed it off as a big joke. Now that they’re in charge, however, a possible nuclear attack by a hostile nation or a terrorist group is a big deal, worthy of a full-on FEMA initiative.
I don’t see it as much of a coincidence that the administration has launched, no pun intended, what amounts to a nuclear scare campaign while at the same time the President is pushing the START Treaty through the lame duck Congress. The unofficial motto of this White House has always been “You don’t ever want a crisis to go to waste” and if there’s no crisis aborning (though some might argue that point), it’s not beyond our President to gin one up.
Cynical? Sure, but fearmongering is what this President does, like you or I breathe. It’s not ethical, but ethics, to paraphrase Saul Alinsky, can always be redefined when you win.

Wish I still owned the house with the bomb shelter. Now the nanny state will make me build one–at my own expense, of course.
