A Winning Formula: Republicans Fight. Reid Retreats. America Wins.
I’ve been hard on the GOP the past few days for their cheese-eating surrender monkey ways on the tax deal, but tonight they did something very right. The Senate’s very own Gollum, Harry Reid, tried to bull rush the Omnibus Spending Bill through the Senate tonight, but he didn’t even get a good run on it. Mitch McConnell rallied every single GOP Senator to oppose the bill. Faced with a united Republican front and with the clock ticking on the end of the session, Reid tucked his tail and backed down.
It was a huge victory for the Tea Parties and everyone else who realizes that the time for giant spending bills packed full of bribes earmarks must come to an end. No, the GOP didn’t bring the same kind of opposition to a similarly pork-filled tax deal, but they deserve praise. We’re going to need a bunch more victories like the one we got tonight and I hope that tonight’s events have taught them the value of fighting, even when winning is not certain.
UPDATE: Tonight’s win was so big it inspired Caleb Howe to poetry (via snarkandboobs’ Twitter feed).
