Regarding the tax issue, the proposed expiration falls right in the middle of the 2012 campaign, when President Lightworker will be running for reelection. There is no way he will want to fight this battle over again - not if he wants to win.
While I generally like Bachmann, DeMint, and Malkin, I think they're letting the perfect be the enemy of the good.
What about the economy? Or does that not actually matter anymore?
I just don't think you would have found enough votes to make the rates permanent with this congress. This will do until we get a friendlier congress and White House in 2013.

I'm in the camp that thinks this was a good deal or, to put it another way, better than what I thought we'd get. Another John McCain certainly can't win it (Why are we running old white guys anyway?). A neophyte like Scott Brown would have the same inexperience at the national level that is hobbling Obama. A Neocon like Bush won't do anything about the soaring costs of medicare (which Obama raided to pay for increasing the base of medicaid). Tax changes and uncertainty pale in comparison to getting spending under control.
Everyone says, "Don't touch my Medicare!" but we can't afford it. Exposing individuals to the effects of market pricing is the only solution. None of the political establishment is ready to end Middle Eastern wars, even if they've resulted in no real positive accomplishments. Taxes here or there may effect short term uncertainty, but deficits and money printing to pay the 2 big expenses also hurt our future outlook.

Saying Obama will one term like Jimmy Carter assumes the Republican party can produce a viable candidate to knock off a celebrity president. I'm glad we avoided a tax hike for now, it is only for two years. And while the 2% payroll tax cut will put some extra money in my pocket, it's not going to help employers.

You make a very good argument against this deal when plenty of others are seeing the proverbial egg on Obama's face and calling it a win. It gives me lots to think about -- my initial impression was that this was a win for Republicans (and I still think it is politically). Of course, the real problem is that even current taxes are too high and government spending remains totally out of control.

Good, thougtful article. What can a Democrat run on in the future? They've conceded the ideological point, essentially forever. If the economy improves, they've lost the argument before it begins - Republicans can simply say, cutting taxes a bit under Obama worked, but they'll work even more with a REAL Republican. If the economy declines, they'll lose again and it's another Jimmy Carter situation.
Liberalism is over. Norquist is right. Also, the reduced revenues will make it easier to push for Soc Security / Medicare privatization. Tonight's the night that economic liberals ceased to have any shot at doing anything substantial ever again. The Reagan framework has been vindicated and will never go in the opposite direction again.

The most rhetorically strident liberal President in generations… and he SIGNS OFF on Bush's tax cuts?

What can a Democrat run on in the future?
