I did not get to see the American premiere of the BBC’s new Sherlock Holmes series, but it’s tucked into the digital safety of my DVR, so I’ll get to it this week when I have time to settle in and give it a good watch. I’m usually very hesitant to watch “reimagined” television shows or movies -I don’t think there has ever been, nor ever will be, a Holmes and Watson to match Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke — but the BBC has earned some good will from me for the first three seasons of the revived Doctor Who, which was some of the best television I’ve seen in a very long time.
Speaking of Doctor Who, Steven Moffat is one of the minds behind the series and that’s very good. His Hugo Award-winning two part episode “The Empty Child”/“The Doctor Dances” was a masterpiece — alternately creepy and mysterious then uplifting and goosebump-inducing. If he writes for Sherlock like he did for that episode, I’d be hard-pressed to stay away from it.
You can get a couple early reviews from my friend Cubachi and Phil Masters. Cubachi also found a link where you can watch the whole episode, and it’s all nice and legal. So if you missed it, you have a chance to make it up.
