The Rise of a New Electoral Meme: George Bush Wasn’t So Bad.
I’m a big believer in coincidence but sometimes two news items come together so perfectly that I can’t help but wonder if the media fix still isn’t in.
Last Friday, the former drama reporter and always drama queen Frank Rich had a column in which he sought to give the Democrats some electoral advice. His plan, so clever that it put an entire family of weasels to shame, was for the Dems to paint the Republicans as more extreme and intolerant than the Dread Chimpy McBushHitlerBurton. On the same day, Peter Beinart has a piece in The Daily Beast that offered the Democrats the very same piece of advice.
Gee, what are the chances that two Democratic activists/media personalities would give the same silly piece of advice in two prominent left-wing publications on the same day? Okay, I admit it’s within the realm of coincidence. After all, the White House put out the word that Democratic candidates should run like scalded dogs from Obamacare just months after the President said he’d “welcome that fight” so it’s not like silly ideas aren’t in demand right now. The left seems to have run out of substantive arguments and have turned That Old Time Religion in a way that would have made them scream bloody murder if, say, John Boehner had taken to the pulpit. They’re flailing so badly that any crazy thing is possible.
Forgive me, though, for thinking there might be a little hanky-panky going on behind the scenes. We’re not so removed from the alleged shut-down of the Giant Media Meme Machine called the J0urnoList and it’s not ridiculous to believe that message coordination isn’t still happening in some other forum.
