The Delivery Presents – From the Geekfest Springs A Special Announcement!

If you’re not showing up for at least part of “The Delivery–Live!” , then you’re really missing out on a ton of fun. What surprises me most about the live format most, as a host, is how it has tightened up the show. Not only are SMP Mike and I more focused on getting to the segments and getting business done, but the show itself has gotten more entertaining and lively. I imagine it’s similar to what an actor must feel like working in front of a live studio audience.

I’m also getting better at hearing myself through my own headphones. I think you can tell the difference between last week’s show and Episode 38. Melissa was fantastic, as she usually is. She filled in the conversational gaps like a champ, which is exactly what a good guest should do. It doesn’t hurt that she’s smart as a whip and as big a geek as I. We covered a lot of ground, from Glee to the Supreme Court to books we’re reading to our ongoing disagreement over the Harry Dresden novels. I still think I carried the day on the latter point.

We also decided to try something a little different, something in which you as a listener can participate. Melissa suggested we have a Book Club discussion about Terry Pratchett’s Guards! Guards! in about a month, since she had just ordered it on my recommendation. She’s going to read it and thought it would be a neat idea to have other listeners read it too. Then, in about a month, I’d have her back on the show and we could discuss it. And when I say “we” I mean “everyone in the chat room”, too.

If you don’t have the book, pick it up from Amazon (at the link) or your favorite book store, or check it out of your local library and give it a read. I’ll announce the date for the Book Club show in a couple of week, when Melissa and I can work out the schedule. Then come join us during the live broadcast to be part of the discussion!

  1. I hate to be the one to rain on the parade here but …

… while I'm sure "The Deliver … LIVE!" is an awesome experience for you and those who are watching live, it's a tad challenging for those of us who catch the podcast to listen to. The audio on the host is less than poor while the audio on the guest is normal; I find myself constantly adjusting the volume to actually hear the show. And there feels like a bit of a disconnect between you and your guest (as you split your time between interacting with the chat room and with your guest).

I know you like this new format, you're having a good time with it, and you want to run with it. But is there any way you can make it a better experience for those of us who are only getting one part of the package?

It's still a work in progress. Right now I'm pushing the video and audio through my Mac Mini Core solo computer and there are some obvious processing power problems with that.

The biggest part of the disconnect is that I'm still getting used to hearing myself through the headphones. I find myself very distracted by my own voice coming back at me a half-second later. It's something I need to get used to, though, so I ask some indulgence on that front.

I've not heard that my audio is as bad as that. I knew we were taking a quality hit, but I'll have to look into it. If it's that bad, I'll talk with SMP Mike about that. It could be that he can adjust things on the production end but if that's not sufficient, then we'll have to end the live experiment.
