The Delivery Presents: New Media, Mad Men, and the Death of the Middlebrow
If I ever have to run a “best of” show, Episode 37 will be at the very top of the list. I think it’s the best show in the short history of The Delivery. I had Stephen Green and Ed Driscoll in for the whole hour and, while I’d love to say I had a lot to do with how it turned out, my best move was bringing those guys in together.
We started off talking about new media, then Ed turned the conversation into how the incredible variety of voices has given us tremendous choice but has also nearly killed middlebrow forms of entertainment. The same subject came up again explicitly in the second half, which started with a discussion of the show Mad Men, but didn’t stay there very long.
The live webcam experiment is also turning out to be a fantastic idea and we’re going to keep it for a while. The folks in the chatroom were smart and funny and added a lot to the show, not only while we were recording, but also during the breaks around the segments.
The only real hitch in the show at this point is that I occasionally sound like I’ve forgotten my train of thought. I blame that on the Rube Goldberg setup we have to employ to run the Skype conference call through UStream that pipes me voice into my headphones with about a half-second delay. The effect of hearing myself, then hearing myself again that soon thereafter is really disorienting and I’m afraid it’ll take me a couple weeks to get used to it.
