Sorry, Michael, but It’s Time for You to Go.

I’m done with Michael Steele. He needs to quit. Now.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele told a group of students that African-Americans “don’t have a reason” to vote for Republicans.

Steele was asked Tuesday night during a speech to roughly 200 students at DePaul University why African-Americans should vote for GOP candidates.

“You really don’t have a reason, to be honest,” Steele responded, as was first reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. “We haven’t done a very good job of giving you one.”

I admit I’m not the chair of a major political party, so it’s possible that Steele is playing some ineffable political game that’s beyond the ken of mere mortals like me. He could be pulling off some truly Machiavellian genius play by responding to an absolute marshmallow of a question like “Why should we vote for you guys?”, with a shrug and barely coherent “Buggered if I know”.

However, let me suggest that Steele’s answer is worse than if he had just whiffed on the question. His answer wasn’t merely ignorant but harmful because he committed exactly the same crime of which he accused his party. If Steele truly believes that the GOP hasn’t been delivering an attractive message to young black voters, then he should have had such a message ready to go at the barest provocation. Not only did he not have a message ready for an audience eager to hear it, he couldn’t even improvise one on the spot. That’s unacceptable.

If black voters really want to see the best of the GOP, then they should look away from the ineffective and incompetent Michael Steele and to a proud Republican like Col. Allen West.

UPDATE: Oh dear. Steele has earned the Double Facepalm and Bob Belvedere is sending him off to the dog track.
