Admit It, DC Residents. Steny Hoyer Hates You.
Sorry, residents of Washington, DC, but Congressional Democrats just aren’t that into you.
The House will not vote on a bill to grant the District of Columbia a voting member of Congress, the majority leader said Tuesday.
Rep. Steny H. Hoyer, Maryland Democrat, said he would not bring the bill to the floor because it cannot reach the floor without add-ons that he cannot accept, such as gun rights in the city.
Steny Hoyer’s authority overrules yours, my friends in the Nation’s Capital. Because he belives you should not have a right expressly given to you by the Constitution, he is not willing to grant you some freedom not included there. Kind of a shame. Why does he hate you like that?
What? Is hate too strong a word? Well, maybe, but doesn’t this story make you wonder, just a little bit, how important the issue of DC voting rights really is to the Majority Leader? After all, he presides over a huge majority. There are no amendments the Republicans can propose that can long defy the will of his party, not even one that would restore to DC residents a long-removed Constitutional right. His counter part in the Senate, Harry Reid, has an almost veto-proof majority. If Steny Hoyer really wants something, he ought to be able to get most of his people behind it, else what good is he as a Majority Leader?
Seriously. What good is he to you?
