Washington Redskins Announce Blockbuster Deal, Ruin My Football Season
The Philadelphia Eagles have reached agreement on a blockbuster intra-division trade that will send perennial Pro Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb to the Washington Redskins, according to multiple sources close to the situation.
The two sides still must finalize language, but McNabb is now headed to Washington. Sources said the deal involved the Redskins’ second-round pick in the 2010 draft and either a third- or fourth-round pick next year, depending on several factors.
I can not even begin to tell you how much I hate this deal, but let me at least try. First, I am a Redskins fan all the way to the bone. Donovan McNabb has been not only a nemesis to my beloved team but an icon of a bitter long-time rival. How on Earth are the players supposed to get a good game-hate on for the Eagles with Mr. Eagle himself now wearing a Redskins jersey? More importantly, how on Earth am I supposed to root for a guy I was booing with all my heart just a few months ago? The trade dilutes the identity of the team, which is never a good thing.
Second, the Redskins don’t actually need a quarterback. I realize I’m running against the grain here, but I still think Jason Campbell is above-average. He’s certainly more than capable of handling any offense Mike Shanahan can devise. Heck, he’s already run three different offenses in his relatively short career and he’s done fairly well with them even with little to no support from the coaching staff or front office. His stats are in the same neighborhood as McNabb’s even though he’s been saddled with a worse offensive line, unreliable running backs, and only one reliable receiver. McNabb, on the other hand, has had a quarterback rating above 93 only twice in his entire 11-season career even though he’s been the cornerstone of his team and one of the most hyped position players in the league.
In other words, Campbell has come awfully close to matching McNabb’s stats with much less support, much less stability, and (for most of his career) a much-worse team around him.
I smell the distinctive stench of Dan Snyder on this deal, and we all know how well his moves have worked out, don’t we?
