The Totalitarianism of Today
I have often equated today’s progressive politics to totalitarianism — the philosophy that the nation, and all of us, work for the government and are, in turn, cared for by it. The overall political goal of the left is to have the government make all our decisions for us in the interests of “the common good”, which they, and only they, are able to define. Our only real task is to play our role as cog in the great utopian machine and to enjoy all the fruits that their brilliance and fairness bring us.
Of course, totalitarianism never works out that way. Progressives are never as smart as they think they are and human nature always wins out (in the form of corruption at the top and rational self-interest at the bottm), which is why every totalitarian system of government ever tried has only produced ruined economies and stunted cultures.
Dan Collins has an excellent post on why modern progressivism and totalitarianism are really the same thing. I expect he could write a book on the subject if he were so inclined (and if the seminal book on the subject hadn’t already been written). I would consider Dan’s post a useful update to Goldberg’s book.
