What you didn't say (surely an oversight!) is that they <em>specifically</em> went hunting SAM sites to clear the way for other aircraft. They wanted to be seen so they could shoot back. There's a courageous band of warriors who proudly carry the name "Wild Weasels". They were the fighter pilots in F-100F, F-105F & G and F-4C & G aircraft fitted with radar sensing gear who were first-in/last-out of the high threat SAM environments of N. Vietnam and then Iraq.
