Brace Yourselves: Democrats Introduce the Trojan Horse Health Care Bill

| March 15, 2010 | Comments (5)

Here it comes, folks. The Democrats have introduced the first step of their plain to ram government-run health care down our throats whether we want it or not. The bill is 2,309 pages long, but don’t get too comfortable with it. Here’s why.

The Democrats need a bill that will pass the Budget Committee quickly, which is what this bill is. We’ve already seen this heaving beast once, which is why the public option (otherwise known as the health care system that has already killed thousands in England) is still in it. Once this Shoggoth of a bill passes through the first gate, it’ll head over to the Rules Committee, where it will be completely gutted and filled with brand new language. This is the reconciliation language that the Democrats have decided, contrary to the actual rules of Congress, will not be subject to the filibuster. Once they fill their Trojan Horse bill with everything they want, they’ll roll it out for the reconciliation votes (No filibustering! This is a special emergency bill!) and present it to America as a big gift.

That last bit is the sneaky part of this process that’s not gotten enough attention. See, the actual purpose of reconciliation is to marry the budget bill passed at the beginning of the fiscal year with the one passed at the end of the year. The idea is that Congress directs the government to reconcile its spending with what was given to it at the beginning of the year (or during the year, if spending levels were changed at some point). What is happening her has been couched as a fiscal matter. Congress is simply making sure that all the federal agencies hit their health care spending targets. No fuss, no muss, right?

Wrong. This is not a fiscal bill at all. It is a compulsion bill. It compels you to buy health care in government-approved ways, from government-approved people, at government-approved prices. It puts the government in charge of how much health care you get, or whether you even get it at all.

This bill, once it passes the Rules Committee with brand new language, will not be a budget bill but a brand new sprawling bureaucracy that will suck up at least a trillion dollars of our money (and that’s even if it does something no government program has ever done, run efficiently). It will control aspects of your life you can not even imagine right now.

That is why this attempt to use the reconciliation process, which had never been a truly contentious process, as a weapon to force you to bow to the Democrats’ will is a farce. The only reason the Democrats are using reconciliation now is because they know there is no way on earth they can get lasting and serious support for government-run health care, even among members of their own party. They are forcing a 50+1 vote in the Senate because they know full well that they don’t have the support there, or among the American people, to break even the hint of a filibuster. They are dealing from a weak hand and, instead of folding and playing the next hand, they’re pulling a gun on us and forcing us to turn over all our chips to them.

Don’t let them get away with it.
