Close, But No Twiki
I don’t know how I missed that a remake of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century is afoot (via Grognardia), but I feel a small amount of shame in the geekiest part of my heart. This is the sort of thing that sits right in the sweetest part of my television/movie sweet spot.
I am still a big fan of the Gil Gerard/Erin Gray iteration of the series, by the way. I am fully aware of all its horrible Gary Coleman and Big Bird Guy baggage. I like it nonetheless. Gil Gerard’s Buck was properly burly and square-jawed and it’s not his fault that the stories didn’t give him quite enough villains to punch (and don’t think I didn’t want him to plant one right on the ginormous forehead of the Vorvon).
This new effort, though, looks like it fully embraces the source material to conjure up a Buck Rogers built out of layers of well-aged pulp. Would that Flash Gordon has gotten that treatment recently.
Here’s the teaser trailer. I would liked to have seen a little more action (maybe a human being or two), but my guess is the creators shared what they could at the time.
Note, by the way, this is going to be a web release. I don’t see an immense budget at work nor a major television station pushing it. This is the kind of entrepreneurship — passion to create that doesn’t seek money but will inevitably find it — about which Matt Kibbe and I talked in the latest episode of The Delivery.
I love the humongous nod to the Buck of the past in the sneak peek video, which I’ve tucked under the jump.
