The Social Tyranny of Obamacare, Coming Soon
I think John Stuart Mill would recognize exactly what’s going on in Washington lately.
Society can and does execute its own mandates; and if it issues wrong mandates instead of right, or any mandates at all in things with which it ought not to meddle, it practices a social tyranny more formidable than many kinds of political oppression, since, though not usually upheld by such extreme penalties, it leaves fewer means of escape, penetrating much more deeply into the details of life, and enslaving the soul itself.
Specifically, he’d recognize this social tyranny in the making.
Obama argued to the group of progressive members that his health care reform bill should be looked at as the foundation of reform, that can be built on in the future. He asked them to help gather votes for the final health care battle and promised that as soon as the bill was signed into law, he’d continue to push to make it stronger. But in a matter of weeks, he stressed, he could sign into law legislation that would lead to 31 million new people being insured, including the woman who wrote him.

But, said one attendee, Obama pointed Kucinich toward single-payer language that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) was able to get into the bill. Kucinich fought for an amendment that would allow states to adopt single-payer systems without getting sued by insurance companies. Obama told Kucinich that Sanders’s measure was similar but doesn’t kick in for several years. “He definitely wrote it down,” said one member of Kucinich, suggesting that he’d look into it.
Remember, folks, that if you can’t get medical treatment because of government rationing, medical personnel shortages, and underfunding (which is exactly what is happening in countries with government-run health care all around the world), then you do not have health care, no matter how “insured” the President says you are.
And if the President gets the single-payer system he wants, it is a mortal lock that you will not get the treatment you need, in the amount you need, when you need it. Don’t believe me? Ask the families of thousands in England who died because of the cost-cutting and bureaucracy demanded by single-payer health care. Sarah Palin’s “death panels” may have become a joke to the totalitarian left, but for the mentally disabled and elderly patients, newborn babies, and those in dire health, it is a very real threat.
And the Democratic Party wants you to live with that. Well, for as long as you survive their tyranny, that is.
