Meet the New Truck, Bigger than the Old Bus

Stiff Upper Lip, thy name is Desiree.

WASHINGTON–White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers told me Friday she will step down next month, after presiding over 330 events in the White House in 14 months.

Rogers is departing after achieving a major goal of President Obama and First Lady Michelle — opening up the White House to make it the “peoples house.”

“As we turn the corner on the first year,” Rogers told me, “this is a good time for me to explore opportunities in the corporate world.”

I’m quite sure that in this economic environment, with unemployment hung at 10 percent and businesses scared spitless to put any money into new employees lest they find themselves a few shekels short of the multitudinous taxes and fees Desiree’s former boss has planned for them, she’ll land right on her feet. There has to be some well-heeled Chicago crony noble entrepreneur who has need for a social secretary.

I would give Ms. Rogers one word of advice. If she hears the sound of an enormous diesel engine behind her, she should run as fast as she can. I hear that the wheels of President Obama’s bus have gotten a bit clogged up with all the people he’s throw under it over the past two years. The replacement has plenty of room to last him to 2012, but it doesn’t look all that fast to me. If she runs, she just might get away.
