Your Congress, Soon to Be Kennedy-Free!
A week ago, the distinguished gentleman from Massachusetts, Patrick Kennedy, decided to throw a few shots at newly-elected Senator Scott Brown. Kennedy called Brown’s candidacy “a joke” because Brown’s mere presence as a Senator threatened some tool of Big Labor that Kennedy wanted to head up the National Labor Relations Board. All those big union donations that filled up his campaign chest have to be paid off somehow and, hey, if you can buy some cheap cred with the people paying your way in Congress then why not, right?
Tonight, Kennedy’s tough talk sounds more like petulant whining as he announced he will retire from Congress at the stately age of 42. The ultra-progressive Congressman (lifetime ACU rating of less than 10) claimed in a video that the reason for his retirement was because his life is “taking a new direction”.
Right. I’m sure his decision had nothing at all to this recent poll.
The poll shows 31 percent of those interviewed said they would “consider another” candidate and 28 percent said they would “vote to replace” Kennedy. Those who would re-elect the eight-term Congressman came in at 35 percent. Five percent weren’t sure…
Kennedy’s numbers are even bleaker when you go statewide: of the 500 polled in both districts, a mere 35 percent give Kennedy a favorable rating, with a 62 percent unfavorable rating. He fared slightly better in District 1 with a 42 percent favorable and 56 percent unfavorable.
Yep, his life was heading in a new direction all right, straight to the unemployment line after the people of Rhode Island tossed him out of a seat that had to be considered as safe as Fort Knox only a year or so ago. It probably didn’t help that not one but two candidates for which he campaigned got trounced last year within months of each other. I guess the old Kennedy magic gets a bit thin after a couple generations or so.
Speaking of which, once Patrick is gone, we will enjoy a completely Kennedy-free Congress for the first time since 1962. Think about that. For the past 45 years, there has been a Kennedy in Congress and now there won’t be.
Hope and Change? Oh, yeah.
UPDATE: Moe Lane has noticed a rather interesting trend. Michelle Malkin has named this the Thursday Night Delight.
