Massachusetts Smackdown
Ronald Reagan was once asked how he’d define victory in the Cold War. His answer pretty much matches how I feel about the special election in Massachusetts tonight.
Republican State Sen. Scott Brown scored an immense political upset Tuesday in the special election to fill the U.S. Senate seat occupied for so long by Democrat icon Ted Kennedy.
With 80% of the vote counted and Brown leading 52-47%, State Atty. Gen. Martha Coakley called Brown to concede defeat and the loss of Senate seat held by her party since 1952 and a state that went for the Obama-Biden ticket by 26 points. Coakley will continue in her state office.
This is an immense victory for the “Three L’s” of mainstream conservatism: limited government, lower taxes, and letting people decide the contentious social issues at the ballot box instead of having them decided for them by Congress or the courts. Scott Brown campaigned on those positions openly and honestly. The voters of Massachusetts got to take a good look at them, compared them to what the Democrats have been doing over the past year, and chose Brown’s conservatism.
As messages go, this one doesn’t get much more blunt. I’ll kick it over to Moe Lane, who has a message for the rest of those precariously-positioned Democrats who think they can vote for totalitarian government from behind cover without penalty.
This message goes out to every vulnerable Democratic Congressman representing a Republican or even centrist district – and after tonight, who among you is not vulnerable? It is a simple message: we can do this the easy way, or we can do it the hard way. The easy way is, you suddenly decide that you have a burning desire to spend more time with your families. So you don’t run for re-election, you walk off stage technically undefeated, and you go join a lobbying firm. The hard way is, you do run for re-election, and we pry you out of your seats.
We want to do this the hard way. We will enjoy doing it.
That’s your only warning. And remember: nobody is going to be able to save you. If the President, the DSCC, the DCCC, the DNC, the SEIU, ACORN, and the netroots couldn’t manage a win in Massachusetts… what do you think that they can do for you?
By the way, tomorrow is President Obama’s first anniversary in office.
Happy Anniversary, Mr. President. Hope you like the lesson in democracy we got you.
