Why Are We Shocked That the President Broke A Promise He Had No Power to Keep?

The blogosphere, along with more than a couple members of the august and well-informed media, is aflame today with the news that Barack Obama looked right into our faces not all that long ago and lied his narrow behind off.

I have a thought about this particular fib, as you might imagine, but first, let me bring in Carolyn Tackett to set the table.

Nobody believed Obama when he said during the campaign that he had never heard the good Rev. Wright’s anti-American rants, why for pity sakes did anyone take him serious when he said (repeatedly) that the health care debate would be covered on C-Span?

That’s a good question, but I have a better one. Why on Earth did anyone take his promise seriously when the President has absolutely no control over Congress or C-SPAN? There is no way that anyone, much less the cynical media, should ever have taken him seriously. In fact, someone should have asked him how he planned on crowbarring Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid into giving up the immense power of back-room dealing to deliver on a promise that would only make him look good. If they were so blinded by the glory of his presence that they couldn’t ask Barack Obama, they surely could have gone to Congressional leaders and asked them if they intended on making good on his pledge.

But no one asked. The MSM swallowed this ridiculous promise like they swallowed all the others then belched them back to us in a gassy cloud or hope and change. No one should be surprised at Nancy Pelosi’s snippy “He’s not the boss of me” response nor all the shady dealing that’s going on where we can’t see it. The time to question the Democrats’ laughable promises to voluntarily hand back their political power was well over a year ago before they got into the position where they could thumb their noses at us and stuff each others’ pockets full of our hard-earned money without fear of immediate reprisal.

This promise, like so many others made by The One, was one he had no power to fulfill, yet that didn’t stop the fawning media from delivering it to us as if it were already a done deal.

UPDATE: Here are a dozen or so more lies that should have gotten a lot more MSM attention when the Democrats told them.

UPDATE 2: I thought this comment was particularly insightful.

The thing of it is, when he said this (and many things similar) during the campaign, it wasn’t just to make fluffy promises to get elected. He plays on people’s ignorance of the processes in which things are done. Most of the people who were impressed by this promise probably never intended to actually watch a debate on C-Span…but figure if he’s saying it out loud, they assume that the press and others will hold him accountable; so they don’t have to do anything else. His promises to make these debates public implied that everything was completely obscured w/ the Bush admin (implied when he wasn’t saying that lie outright). And the people who voted for him bought that too because again, they just assume no one would tell a bold faced lie right there on TV with the whole world watching.

It is precisely Obama's arrogant assumption that has has power over everything that is losing him followers.

Even some of the die-hard Kool-aid drinkers I know were startled when he took over ABC for the day, when he took over the car companies, when he dictated legislation to Congress earlier this week and when he told C-Span what they could and couldn't have.

You don't have a president in Barack Obama.

    You have a Fuehrer.
