The viciousness of online discourse has been pondered from many perspectives, but it really comes down to the fact that people think they can say anything they want and never get their asses kicked for it.
Largely, they’re right.
I suspect that things would nicen up quickly if people had to comment under their real names and if they had to send those comments directly to the people about whom they were commenting. Courage is pretty easy when you’re a distance away, hiding behind a nicknam.

I totally agree…however…anonymity while it can be abused (by wimpy jerks who wouldn't have the courage in person)…is sort of necessary for some of us.
With the lefties pretty much in charge of HR departments, Academia, etc…having your real name signed to certain opinions can be detrimental to one's livelihood. Just ask Proposition 8 supporters.
