The Great Space Flame

Science scores again!  The European Southern Observatory has unveiled a few images from the new Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy*, otherwise known as VISTA, and they’re pretty spectacular. Here are a couple images from the general area of Orion’s Belt (You know, where the galaxy is). The first is a regional photo and the second is a more detailed image of the Flame Nebula (NGC 2024).

*If you’re wondering, by the way, why it was necessary to note that the telescope was “for Astronomy”, then you’ve obviously never had to come up with a snappy acronym before.
