To Arms, Slowly: The Second Amendment Comeback
According to this AP article, the Second Amendment is back in vogue in state houses around the country. I’m glad to see the trend is moving back toward common sense and individual freedom. In a free and orderly society like ours, we should always lean toward more liberal gun laws because moving the other way takes you closer to a police state.
This quote from an anti-Second Amendment group caught my attention.
A Violence Policy Center project has mined news reports to find that more than 100 people have been killed by holders of handgun-carry permits since 2007, including nine law enforcement officers. The project originally intended to list all gun crimes by permit holders, but there were too many to keep track of, Rand said.
“They shoot each other over parking spaces, at football games and at family events,” Rand said. “The idea that you’re making any place safer by injecting more guns is just completely contradicted by the facts.”
I wonder if they bothered to learn how many people had been killed in the past two years in places where possession of a firearm is forbidden such as schools and shopping malls. I imagine the number would be considerably larger than 100. They could start with the nine here, add the 13 here, the 33 here, six here, and six more here. That brings us to 68 victims found in about ten minutes using a pretty simple Google search.
That’s not to say that those 68 wouldn’t be dead if any of them, any of the well over 100 wounded, or bystanders, had been allowed to carry a firearm but it is certain that there would have been at least some deterrent effect.
