I”m pretty sure it’s okay to be embarrassed that we ever elected Jimmy Carter as our President. Would four years of Gerald Ford really been all that horrible? At the very least, we wouldn’t have a former President running around doing this.
Carter singled out the Southern Baptist Convention and Roman Catholic Church, claiming that they “view that the Almighty considers women to be inferior to men.” However, both Christian faiths hold to the Scriptural truth that God created men and women equal.
“Their continuing choice provides a foundation or justification for much of the pervasive persecution and abuse of women throughout the world,” said Carter. Carter goes on to list horrific violations against women such as rape, genital mutilation, abortion of female embryos and spousal battery.
I’ll admit to not knowing everything about Somalia, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Darfur, Iran or a number of other nations which religious laws require horrific abuse of women, but I’m fairly sure they aren’t taking their cues from the Southern Baptists or the Pope.
Even in more liberal and democratic countries, the Baptists or the Catholics are the ones killing women because their religious laws demand it.
And last time I checked, no religion has a particularly large footprint in China, where forced abortions has been just one of a plethora of abuses heaped upon women.
However, if Jimmy Carter is looking for a new religion that is giving people reason to talk about global population control (which will have to include forced abortions), I suggest he cast his eyes Copenhagenward.
