Back in the Days of Indoor Smoking and Skinny Ties, They Made Jazz Like This
It’s the day before Thanksgiving. Most folks are home for the day, making ready for the celebration tomorrow, so how about a little jazz to help?
Trane. Miles. New York, 1959. The song is “So What”.
You can almost smell the cigarette smoke in the air and the slight must from the studio, can’t you? I’m taken by how differently Miles and Coltrane approached playing. Notice that when Miles is soloing, Trane is watching and listening. When Trane takes over, Miles ducks to the back and has a smoke.
Those were the days when you could smoke in a building you didn’t actually live in. The good old days.

Thanks for posting this. This is such great music and contains 2 things missing from todays' "artists" Heart and soul. Not that plastic manufactured, put any one in front of a mic crap they call music today.
The only part of "that thing you do" is near the end when it's the old jazz guy and the drummer jamming in the studio.
Happy Thanksgiving, Jimmie!
