A congressional report released Friday includes allegations that D.C. Public Schools Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee mishandled a complaint that Kevin M. Johnson, her current fiance, engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with a student at a California charter school in 2007.
At least one staff member at the St. Hope Academy resigned in protest over the handling of the case, according to the report, released jointly by Sen. Charles E. Grassley, Iowa Republican, and Rep. Darrell Issa, California Republican.
This is interesting to me because Gerald Walpin, the Inspector General who was fired illegally by the Obama administration, found all sorts of fiscal shenanigans by Johnson and wanted to remove him from ever being eligible for federal funds. Walpin was overruled by the U.S. Attorney in that area and Johnson used his ability to get federal stimulus funds to get re-elected as Mayor of Sacramento, where he was a major backer and fundraiser for President Obama’s campaign.
Now…one might be tempted to ask what connection there was between this sexual misconduct charge and his misuse of somewhere around million dollars while at the St. Hope Academy. Perhaps there is none. But perhaps Walpin, in the process of making sure our tax dollars were spent properly, was getting way too close to something that could have blown up in the President’s face. Remember, Watergate started with a little nothingburger of a scandal, too.
