Eric Holder’s Very Bad, Posterized Day
I’ve been meaning to write a couple posts about Attorney General Eric Holder’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier this week, but other oblgiations have imposed themselves on me. However, there are a couple points I want to share.
Before I do that, I want to note that the progressive already had their go-to talking point — we on the right are somehow frightened of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed — fully deployed. Sister Toldjah and Monque Stewart each run that argument, such as it was, through the Cuisinart of Reason and what’s left isn’t very pretty at all.
Holder’s testimony wasn’t very pretty either, judging from the clips and chunks of Q&A I’ve seen thus far. Here is Holder’s written testimony, which is the most reasonable and intelligent part of Holder’s appearance. Things went downhill quickly from there. To get a good taste of how bad Holder’s appearance was, witness this rhetorical posterizing delivered by Lindsey Graham.
That was vicious, no?
Moe Lane’s comment was the best I’ve seen all week.
Not filmed was the bit in the end where Holder was on the floor, looking for his teeth. You do not walk into a situation like that without an elementary knowledge of the relevant historical record*. You do not come completely unprepared for a obviously-telegraphed question like “So. What are you going to do with a captured bin Laden?”
I would disagree with Moe on one point (and Andrew McCarthy, who expands on the point in greater detail). I believe that Holder did know the relevant history. I believe he knew very well that we’ve never, ever done what the Obama administratino wants us to do with KSM. You can tell that from the answer he started to give, which was essentially a half-hearted brush-off of the actual question, then a recapitulation of a point he had already made. Holder knows darned well that he doesn’t have a single historical or legal precendent for granting an illegal combatant the full rights and privileges of a defendent in a criminal jury trial but he can’t very well come out and say that. The second he does, the game is over. So he had to hem and haw and accept the Muhammed Ali-like beatdown from Graham.
