President Obama directly acknowledged for the first time Wednesday that the prison facility at Guantanamo Bay will not close by the January deadline he set, but he said he hoped to still achieve that goal sometime next year.
Obama refused, however, to set a new deadline.
In an interview in the Chinese capital with Major Garrett of Fox News, Obama said he was “not disappointed” that the Guantanamo deadline had slipped, saying he “knew this was going to be hard.”
It’s almost time for Karl Rove and me to do that “Har. Har. We were right” dance. We probably won’t get it, since the President’s 3-D Defense (Delay, Dither, Dance) doesn’t provide the sort of clear statement we’d need to make our prediction correct. But I’m still wagering that by 2012, Gitmo will still be open for business and Islamists head-choppers will still be staying there.
