I Don’t Care About Nidal Hasan, But I Do Care About Islam
I really don’t care why Major Nidal Malik Hasan tried to kill upwards of 50 soldiers at Fort Hood last week.
Look, I understand he had grievances. Some of the other boys in school other soldiers with whom he worked in the past gave him static for being a Muslim (and, hey, Nidal, way to prove them all wrong, huh? I bet all the other Muslim soldiers are thanking you a whole pantload for making their lives so much easier now.) I get that he didn’t want to go to war, that he felt his Muslim faith was in conflict with the promise he made the people of the United States. I am willing to believe that all the Terrible Tales of Terror he heard from fellow soldiers gave him the heebie-jeebies.
I simply don’t care.
What I do care about is how Major Hasan spouted Islamist cant in front of fellow soldiers and superior officers and nothing was done at all. I care that legal authorities knew he was in frequent contact with an avowed enemy of the country and refused to take action. I care that he left clues to his alliegance in plain sight and those in a position to stop him blinded themselves on purpose.
I care that more than eight years after Islamists tried to kill tens of thousands of Americans, after Islamists have murdered innocents in a dozen nations, and on the day we are finally putting to death an Islamist mass murderer, we still can’t bring ourselves to treat Islam like we treat every other religion on the planet.
I care that our media are willing to twist the words of an honorable and brave man to cover up direct evidence that Hasan’s perverse Islamic beliefs were what drove him to kill.
I care that we are infantilizing every member of an ancient and sophisticated religion by reducing their beliefs to something we can safely stick in a box marked “Religion of Peace – Nothing to Worry About” instead of seeing it as the great hall full of conflicting sects and contending beliefs it, and every other major religion, is.
I care that if we don’t stop treating Islam like a subway third rail, more of us are going to die.
