Yes, Folks, Bloggers Can Do Live Reporting. Here’s Some Now.
I just got off the phone with Stacy McCain, who has arrived in Manchester, KY, which is in Clay County near the center of the Sparkman murder investigation. This is his initial impression of the town, which to read the prevailing commentary about the area, is just stinking with violent anti-government maniacs.
“Manchester is nothing like it’s being portrayed on television. I pulled off the highway and I saw a Mickey Ds, a Wendys, an Arby’s, a Rite-Aid, a Huddle House. There’s a Pizza Hut, where I just had dinner. The biggest concern here in town are the Clay County Tigers. The high-school cheerleading squad was doing a fundraiser, working the tables as waitresses at Pizza Hut as a fundraiser. And they all had on their ‘Go Tigers’ t-shirts.”
The idea that they’re sitting around festering with ‘right wing populism’ and whatever Andrew Sullivan said was going on here…is so far removed from the reality of the place.”
Expect him to file a more detailed story as he gets near an internet connection. He’s talked to a couple folks in the area on background, to get a sense of how the story has developed so far, and he shared some of the details me. I won’t steal his thunder, but suffice it to say, it’s not what you’ve read. There are likely to be a few twists, so keep your eyes on Stacy’s site.

Jimmie, I was raised in neighboring Pulaski Co. Kentucky and know Manchester, London, Corbin and that section of the Dabiel Boone Natl. Forest well. Nobody in that are would attack someone just because they work for the government. There is a lot more to this story. Pot farmers, you betcha. Radical anti-government militias, please.
I expected there to be much more to the story than has been reported thus far. I'm familiar with rural W.Va. and VA and it's much the same there, too.
Nobody in that area…

that’s interesting news!
I have been a resident in Manchester for the last seven years and I can tell you that there are many great, well educated, and faith beliving people in this county. We get a bad name from a few people that continue to break the law. Believe it or not we live a very normal life here and we are making headway in gathering up the drug dealers and corrupt officals that have ruled here for too many years.
