I Guess When the President Said “Struggle Against Terrorism”, He Meant “Distraction from Obamacare”?

Another urgent threat to global security is the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This is the central front in our enduring struggle against terrorism and extremism. There, as in the Middle East, we must understand that we cannot deal with our problems in isolation.

Going forward, we must set clear priorities in pursuit of achievable goals that contribute to our collective security. My administration is committed to refocusing attention and resources on Afghanistan and Pakistan and to spending those resources wisely. That’s why we are pursuing a careful review of our policy.

President Barack Obama, Remarks to employees of the U.S. State Department, January 22, 2009

Oh, what a difference a few months makes.

The military general credited with capturing Saddam Hussein and killing the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, says he has spoken with President Obama only once since taking command in Afghanistan.

“I’ve talked to the president, since I’ve been here, once on a VTC ,” Gen. Stanley McChrystal told CBS reporter David Martin in a television interview that aired Sunday.

“You’ve talked to him once in 70 days?” Mr. Martin followed up.

“That is correct,” the general replied.

So, was the President lying through his teeth when he said he was “committed to refocusing attention and resources on Afghanistan” or did he just get distracted by a shiny object and forget about the whole global war the Islamist butchers are waging against us and every other civilized nation on the planet?

My bet is on the latter. President Obama doesn’t strike me as a liar. He does strike me as a self-important naif who is more concerned with building his totalitarian utopia here in the US than he is dealing with the world as it actually exists. He’ll say whatever he has to to whomever he has to in order to achieve his goals. Unfortunately, victory isn’t one of his goals. Unless, of course, you’re talking about those dastardly right-wingers, then it’s all scorched-earth all the time.

No wonder McChrystal’s report leaked through the Washington Post. If he had sent it through the normal channels, it would probably be sitting, unread, on the President’s desk.

UPDATE: Pat Austin found a spot-on quote from Caroline Glick.

Since Obama took office, he has been abandoning one US ally after another while seeking to curry favor with one US adversary after another. At every turn, America’s allies – from Israel to Honduras, to Columbia, South Korea and Japan, to Poland and the Czech Republic – have reacted with disbelief and horror to his treachery. And at every turn, America’s adversaries – from Iran to Venezuela to North Korea and Russia – have responded with derision and contempt to his seemingly obsessive attempts to appease them.

Read the rest of Pat’s post. She says a couple important things.

UPDATE 2: “A Teachable Moment”. Note, particularly, the line about how superpowers die.
