Michigan’s War Against The Pernicious Babysitter Menace Continues Apace

Apparently, the most pressing concern the government of Michigan has involves babysitters. I already pointed you to how the state is trying to unionize care providers without their consent, or even their knowledge.

Now, there’s this:

A West Michigan woman says the state is threatening her with fines and possibly jail time for babysitting her neighbors’ children.

Lisa Snyder of Middleville says her neighborhood school bus stop is right in front of her home. It arrives after her neighbors need to be at work, so she watches three of their children for 15-40 minutes until the bus comes.

The Department of Human Services received a complaint that Snyder was operating an illegal child care home. DHS contacted Snyder and told her to get licensed, stop watching her neighbors’ kids, or face the consequences.

“It’s ridiculous.” says Snyder. “We are friends helping friends!” She added that she accepts no money for babysitting.

I’ll turn it over to The Blogprof from here:

While Michigan is facing a $2.8 billion deficit the coming fiscal year beginning Oct. 1, with even that budget coming down to the wire and may result in a partial state shutdown, there appears to be plenty of money to have busybody bureaucrats don babysitter police badges. Just what the heck is going on over at DHS anyway?

Obviously, they don’t have enough to do. Perhaps the voters can given them a new job poring over the want ads for new work when the next election rolls around.

  1. [...] I guess now that Michigan is done cleaning up prostitution, meth-labs and gangs running wild, they can concentrate on the really tough crime out there. Like outlaw baby-sitters. [...]

Ms. Snyder should be commended for volunteering a helping hand to make sure these kids are kept safe until the bus arrives. How many times have we heard about children being abducted while walking to school or while standing alone waiting for a bus? The authority figures making these threats of jail time apparently never learned how to prioritize, or for that matter, have any common sense. It's a sad day in this country when we threaten to punish someone for simply helping out a neighbor by making sure three kids get to school safely, when we have criminals that we can't seem to catch who are hurting children every day. How do you sleep at night when you enforce such stupid laws as this? Imagine it were your child at the bus stop alone………, do you want to get that phone call from the school notifying you that your child did not get off the bus?
