How worried is the left of the ginormous tea party gathering that’ll happen in Washington, DC today? Pretty darned worried, I’d say:

On the eve of what organizers call a ‘Big Ol’ TEA Party’, the Washington, D.C., offices of FreedomWorks were evacuated by DC Metro police on Friday afternoon after the conservative organization reported to authorities at 3:42 pm ET that it had received a bomb threat.

At 4:48 pm ET, the organization put out a Twitter message saying that it turned out to be a false alarm but the organization is not happy about the disruption.

Meanwhile, Congressional Democrats are sending around a memo saying they expect upwards of two million people at the rally against high taxes, stifling government, and gigantic deficits. I agree with Mary Katharine that the memo is probably a case of Pelosi’s shop trying to manage expectations and set up the protesters for failure by wildly overestimating the expected turnout. The exercise stinks of desperation.

The truth is, the Democrats, Pelosi especially, recessed in August without a care in the world. They thought they could hold a couple sham town hall meetings, then come back and say they spent their month listening to the voices of the people. Well, they got the back of the hand from the American public instead. It took a few weeks, but the message has sunk in that they’re now working against the will of the people and they’re going to have to campaign awfully hard to make it look like they’re still in control of the debate.

And they may call in their thugs for help, so, to my friends who will be in DC tomorrow demanding that their government listen to them for a change, enjoy yourself thoroughly but be watchful. There will be people there trying to discredit everything you do. You can bet on that. Be smart and when the provocations come, don’t give the left the negative headlines they desperately want. Laugh at them. Nothing renders an earnest progressive more impotent than the humiliation of honest and joyous laughter.
