As It Happens, Americans Don’t Tend to Think Health Care Costs Are Driving Them Toward Eating Dog Food
In all the hubbub over Obamacare, there’s one question I’ve never seen anyone attempt to answer: Who told Congress and the President that health care needed to be overhauled?
I’ve never seen any real cry from the American people to tear down and rebuild our health care system. Oh, sure, several left-wing groups (funded heavily by progressive activists) have gotten together and pushed for it, but they don’t exactly constitute a groundswell of support for what the President and the Democratis majority have been trying to do the past few months.
As it happens, I just don’t see a popular mandate for Obamacare. Even the chief complaint about our health care system, that it’s so expensive people can’t afford it, is one that many fewer Americans have these days.
Fewer Americans are afraid that they will be unable to pay for healthcare services and fewer expect to postpone medical treatments due to costs, according to a Thomson Reuters survey published on Monday.
Researchers found a steady increase in people’s confidence about their ability to pay for healthcare services — it rose 12 percent between March and July this year.
That last paragraph is striking. Americans are growing more confident they can handle their health care costs, even though we’re still in the middle of one of the worst recessions in recent memory. Where is this confidence coming from? I honestly dont’ know. It’s possible that the health care debate has caused people to look at their own situation and conclude that they’re not nearly as bad off as they’ve been told they are.
If that’s the case, then demanding quick votes on the plan before any normal human being could possibly read them has damaged the Obamacare cause badly (and perhaps fatally).
