During the Bush administration, you couldn't get near a Bush event carrying a gun. Hell, you'd be arrested just for wearing a John Kerry T-shirt. And that's if you could get a ticket from the local Republican Party first. Now, guns are welcome at all of Obama's events. As for Thomas Jefferson's comments, they are so far outdated now as to be completely meaningless. My AK-47 is useless against our government's helicopter gunships, even if I switch it full-auto (takes a minute). Unless I can legally own a few Stinger missiles, an F-16, and a nuclear sub, I don't pose any threat at all to the government. Even if I had those, I still wouldn't stand a chance against US military and it's superior command and control systems.
