So Long Sarah, but Not Goodbye
Today is Sarah Palin’s last day as Governor of Alaska and I’ll be on PRI’s “The Takeaway” show at about 6:45 AM tomorrow talking about it for a few minutes. I was on the show earlier this month talking about Palin and I expect my segment tomorrow will be about the same. I’m not sure at this point if I’ll be on with someone else or not.
If you can’t tune in when I’m on, I’ll post a link to the segment as soon as I see it.
I think the thrust of the interview will be about what Palin should do now that she’s no longer Governor. In truth, I really don’t know. I’m hesitant to say she should do anything. Were I in her shoes, I’d take a few months with my family and I’d do a little bit of fishing and hunting and travelling. If I felt in the mood to do so, I’d touch base with a few political types like Newt Gingrich and Michael Steele. I’d make myself available to candidates like Chuck Devore, Marco Rubio, Bob McDonnell, Pat Toomey, and even Scott Ott and ask if they wanted me to help with fund-raising or a couple few appearances. I’d make myself available without being pushy about it. Aside from that, I’d build my PAC and send money to help unseat as many Democrats as possible in 2010 and write my book.
I don’t see the need for Palin to jump back into the political spotlight in the next couple of years. She can do a lot of good, and rehabilitate much of her image sorely damaged by Democratic assaults, by being fairly low-key and showing herself to be a “team player”. Except that the team she’d be building wouldn’t be the team chosen by the Republican party establishment. It’d be a team she put together informally and the old-fashioned way, by helping them when there was no immediate angle to it for her. I’ve the feeling that having a few friendly faces in the Senate and a few State Houses in 2011 would set her up rather nicely if she felt like taking a shot at the White House in 2012.
UPDATE: Here’s the link to my segment. My line about Sarah needing to get out Alaska’s way so it can operate without her as a distraction seemed to impress John Hockenberry, who called it one of the most concise statements about her retirement he’s heard yet.
Kudos to Dan Bross of KUAC in Fairbanks, AK. We went live at 6:45 AM, which means he was awake and very lucid at 2:45 AM local time. I can’t imagine any subject I’d be willing to talk about at that time of day. He did a great job.

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE PALIN FUNDRAISE FOR MARCO RUBIO. WE ALL KNOW MARCO THINKS HIGHLY OF PALIN!! AND THAT WOULD PUT RUBIO OVER THE TOP! RUBIO-2010!!
