Washington, D.C. has been behaving rather strangely. No, I’m not talking about the usual suspects who inhabit the Federal buildings whose strangeness is becoming incredibly tiresome. I mean the city itself. It’s been a year since the D.C. City government was forced by the Supreme Court to give residents their Second Amendment rights back yet the city has not become a cauldron of gun violence.

Well, at least not any more than it was before the Heller decision. As it turns out, the anti-gun lobby was exactly wrong and those of us who hold to a more common-sense view of humanity were right. Law-abiding citizens did not suddenly become shootout-crazed desperados if they are allowed to keep a handgun in their homes and the city has not turned into a modern-day Tombstone with an OK Corral in every cul-de-sac.

On the other hand, criminals continues to act criminally and the gun violence that regular folks fear has barely lessened. Perhaps if the city government spent less time cracking down on people whose only “crime” is a desire to exercise a Constitutional right, it would have more resources available to deal with the real gun problem.
