Smitty dropped me a note to ask if I had a picture of The Sundries Shack as glorious as that of the grocery store next to Jules Crittenden’s Right Wing Warmonger’s Bookshop. As it happens, yes I do and it’s an awfully nice place, as befits The World’s Finest Country Store-Themed Blog.
I came across this photo a couple of years ago, in the Library of Congress’ photo collection (a great resource if you love old photography). I’ve been holding it for the day I could use it in the header of The Shack in some fashion (that way, by the way, is not that far away). I think it captures the sort of homey, comfortable feel I’ve always tried to build here. And it tugs at my heart for some reason, too. If I could, I’d buy my groceries from a store like that every week.
So if you were wondering what The Sundries Shack would look like if it were a real building, here you go.
No offense intended to Jules, of course. I’m sure his clapboard market is a fine, fine place. But it’s no Sundries Shack, right.

UPDATE: After 5 1/2 years, I wouldn’t say it’s new. It’s probably better to say it’s lightly used. I wouldn’t mind if some new traffic scuffed things up a bit, though.
