The Tehran Tyrants Called Out by Fellow Clerics
Well, you know what they say, when you’ve lost Qum, you’ve lost the election.
CAIRO — An important group of religious leaders in Iran called the disputed presidential election and the new government illegitimate on Saturday, an act of defiance against the country’s supreme leader and the most public sign of a major split in the country’s clerical establishment.
A statement by the group, the Association of Researchers and Teachers of Qum, represents a significant, if so far symbolic, setback for the government and especially the authority of the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whose word is supposed to be final.
Ed Morrissey points out that this statement gutshoots Khamenei’s claim that his electoral win was divinely-inspired. It’s also the second statement issued by the association, which had come out before the election was certified by the Mullahs to ask that the results be nullified, though the group had not made any claim that the results were illegitimate.
Now, they’re firmly on the side of the protesters and Mousavi, which puts them in the Mullah’s cross hairs as well. Khamenei and Mad Mahmoud still have the Revolutionary Guard and the considerable wealth of the government at their disposal. If they choose to use them, the statement from Qum won’t matter very much.
Though a statement from Washington might.
