What’s Funny and What Isn’t.

Apropos of this post, I present this tweet from Andrew Malcolm.

JimmyFallon on Iran’s elections: The loser claims fraud, wants to sue. If he still losses [sic], he plans to make a documentary on global warming.

Now that’s a funny joke. Do you see the difference between that and what Wanda Sykes and David Letterman did? Their “jokes” weren’t humor at all. See, humor is not just “making people laugh”. I could go out and rig up a little hidden wire to trip up old ladies and make them fall into a mudpuddle and get people to laugh at it. But that’s not humor. That’s meanness disguised as humor. When you’re laughing at people who are not there to defend themselves, you’re not telling jokes, you’re hurling insults and you’re being cowardly to boot.
