Exactly right, Andrew. I'd also say that the horror of Lovecraft's stories were in the suspense of the looming terror's…err…looming.

For some reason every Lovecraft film seems to go for horror. The trouble is that it completely misses the point of Lovecraft who did not think his writing was horror but dark fantasy.

That's good to know. I'm pretty familiar with the basic story, so being scared wasn't a factor. But if it can throw a nice chill into someone who isn't, well that's a bonus.

It will probably not frighten you – although the background music is very good – but it is respectful of both the source material AND of silent film conventions.
