So What Happens if You Cross the Empathy of Sotomayor with the Politics of Cheney?
My newest post is up at the American Issues Project blog. I have been thinking about Judge Sotomayor’s “the law is what I say it is” attitude and where that could lead. As it happens, that place isn’t pretty for conservatives or progressives.
If you want to have a bit of fun today, try out this little experiment. Ask your favorite ardent leftist if they’d like to live in a country where the judges have the same thoughts about empathy and feeling as Judge Sotomayor but the politics of Dick Cheney. I recommend you keep a couple paper sacks handy for the inevitable hyperventilating. Also, do not do this to a coworker if you happen to be a high steel worker or a brain surgeon.
Here’s another bonus consideration for your leftist friend. How long do you think it’ll take for the deep-pocketed special interest groups to realize that the locus of political power had shifted from the legislators to the judges? My guess is about 4.3 seconds, give or take four seconds. If you think corruption is a problem now, wait until those hundreds of millions of dollars start pouring into our Federal court system where there is no worry about an election every couple of years. Don’t for a second think it can’t happen. When the judicial branch abdicates its role as impartial arbiter of the law and assumes the mantle of overseer, no power in the world will be able to stop the people from doing whatever they must to curry favor from their new black-robed overlords.
Yeah, that’s be a real wonderful place to live, wouldn’t it? Please go read the whole thing and leave a nice comment or two so the big guys at AIP see the value of the blog and send a bit more money our way.
