One of my favorite web sites in all the world is Shorpy. I am a nut for good photos, especially landscapes, though I know less than beans about photography. Shorpy puts up a real stunner of a picture about once a week and the one that’s up today is, well…
Wow…just wow. When I picture New York City in my head, that’s pretty much what it looks like.
Gabriel Malor, who blogs at Ace’s place, is a fan of the site, too. He picked out a couple very good pictures. The second one is especially dizzy-making.

You know, when I walk down the streets of New York, my picture is of a homeless guy pissing on a multi-million dollar building. And guess what? I always get to see that. Welcome to New York, you f**ks. But it's still nothing like Bangkok. That's a city where reality hits you hard in the face. And then it does a kidney punch and kicks you in the groin just for good measure.
As for the picture, my Bangkok pictures are better. But they aren't even close to my roommate's Cambodia pictures. There's something kind of striking about a picture that looks down the barrel of an AK-47 held by a Khmer Rouge soldier. But he's in Thailand now, so I bet he's got some great pictures of the red shirt riots. And hopefully he has a red head band for me. I already have a yellow one, so I'd like the complete set.
But if you really want to see some cool photographs, check out the ones of the 1968 invasion at the national museum in Prague. Photographers were climbing on top of Russian tanks to get those shots. And some of them literally died for those shots. As a photographer, I can appreciate that. There are shots that I say I'd die for. But I didn't actually die for them. And if Russian tanks were rolling in to my town, I'm not sure that I'd be taking pictures of it.
