The World is Watching from Behind Prison Bars
If you want to know the real reason why our President shouldn’t be giving the soul-brother handshake to a tinpot tyrant, here it is.
In New York this week, I asked a former Eastern European dissident who spent time in prison under the Communists: “If you were sitting in a cell in Cuba, Iran or Syria and saw this photo of a smiling American president shaking hands with a smiling Hugo Chávez, what would you think?”
He said: “I would think that I was losing ground.”
There are countless millions of people right now whose oppression grew just a little more brutal because President Obama has spent the better part of two weeks assuring them that our top foreign policy priority is getting in the good graces of their oppressors.
That is immoral, cowardly, and wrong.
The irony here is that the very same people who are applauding the President for his “Sucking Up to Tyrants” tour are the ones who say they are most concerned about our image around the world (as expressed in total apologies for the Bush administration).
