RIP Dave Arneson
Most of you will have no idea who Dave Arneson was, but a few of you who also have a few oddly-shaped dice in a velvet bag or a box (or, in my case, a plush Frankenstein’s Monster head) somewhere probably will.
Arneson was the co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons, along with E. Gary Gygax. Gygax passed away about this time last year and I am sad to see that Mr. Arneson has also passed away.
I had a soft spot in my heart for Blackmoor, one of two original campaign worlds for D&D (the other, introduced the year before, was Greyhawk) and the two character classes devised for that world, the Assassin and the Monk. I think that there have been more arguments had over hex maps around the world about the Monk character class than anything other D&D-related subject.
Except maybe the Second Edition vs Third Edition debate which can still start a good internet slap-fight.
(via Iain Murray, who I imagine might well know who Tenser and Mordekainen are)
