Work? Who Would Build a Society on That?
Ah, Glenn Reynolds just knocked the Snark Ball right the heck out of the park. Commenting on this article, which shows that effort matters a hell of a lot more than ability or intelligence, he says:
Hey, I’ve got an idea — why don’t we organize society so that it rewards hard work! We could even see that people who work harder and do better make more money! And then their efforts would pay off in more general societal prosperity, making life better for everyone! And we could . . . Naaaah.
Heh.
Yeah, but if we did that then life would be unfair because some people would have more than others and they’d go whining to their legislators who would quickly realize they could take money from the successful and give it everyone else thus ensuring that people would vote for them. That would create one of those vicious circles where people whine even more and the legislators take even more money to buy even more votes.
That would be sheer insanity, wouldn’t it?
